When scanning an image from a Windows 2008 Server or Terminal Server an error 20079 Lead Error Twain Source Manager not found.

This problem occurs because Windows 2008 Server and Windows 2008 Server R2 do not install scanner and TWAIN support by default.  The scanner functions and TWAIN Source Manager are part of the Desktop Experience Feature.  To install Desktop Experience, run Server Manager under Administrator Tools, Highlight Features, click Add Features, check off Desktop Experience, and continue to install this feature.

On a 2008 Terminal Server (RDP Server) each user must have a copy of the TWAIN Source Manager accessible under their Home Folder.  After adding the Desktop Experience Feature, find the user?s Home Folder.  To do this, open a command prompt while logged in as that user.  Type the word SET at the prompt, hit enter.  Look for the environment variable Homedrive and Homepath to find out the user?s Home Folder.  Next, log into the server as Administrator, copy the following files and folders from the Windows folder to the Windows folders under the user?s Home Folder (i.e. from C:\windows to C:\Users\johndoe.domain\windows):

This must be done for each user of the Terminal (RDP) Server.  A login script could be created to do this task automatically.
